ATEM 9.5 Update: Unlocking New Webcam Output & USB Direct Control Features with MixEffect

The Blackmagic Design ATEM switcher 9.5 update brings configurable webcam output support to the ATEM Mini Pro, Mini Extreme, Mini Extreme ISO, ATEM SDI Pro, ATEM SDI Extreme ISO switchers.

There’s also a secret ability for controllers like MixEffect to directly connect to the ATEM switcher over USB. This means you don’t need to be connected to an Ethernet network in order to control your ATEM switcher with MixEffect!

This video goes over the webcam output, direct connect, configurable Multiview, disable Fade to Black, and SRT support.

USB-C Cables and Dongles

One thing that I’ve learned is that you can’t use a USB-C to USB-C cable between the ATEM switcher and your iPad or iPhone. You need to use:

  • USB-C to USB-A cable and USB-A to USB-C dongle
  • USB-C to USB-C cable, USB-C to USB-A dongle, and a USB-A to USB-C dongle

Note: With the dongle, you may also have to flip the USB-C cable if USB View doesn’t show the camera.

I still recommend using a USB-C hub because you’ll have access to HDMI Out, Ethernet, and Power, which is important when running MixEffect for hours at a time with your ATEM switcher.

The ability to connect to your ATEM directly and configure the webcam output is available in the current version of MixEffect. The ability to configure the Multiview, toggle the Disable Fade to Black button, and SRT support will be coming in the next release of MixEffect, coming later this month.
